この曲について
荒れ果てて何もない大地を行く二人の男女の映像が目に浮かぶようですね。何とも荒涼感と野性的な雰囲気に満ち溢れたドラマチックな曲です。
恐らくシチュエーションとしては、何も見い出せない世界に絶望を覚えた女性を、主人公がやや強引に立ち直らせようとしているのだと思われます。1番で「Am I the king of nothing at all? And you're the queen of nothing at all」と言っていますが、この世界に何も見い出せていないのは自分も同じということを伝えているのかなと思いました。
そして、その何もない世界を抜け出そうと相手を促し、共に歩き始めます。ここは主人公がかなり力強く相手を説き伏せていますね。そして、吹き荒ぶ嵐の中を折れそうな心と闘いながら一歩、また一歩、お互いに確かめ合いながら懸命に前に進んでいく姿が見える気がします。そしてこの、どんな困難の中に有ろうと進めて行くこの一歩が、タイトルの One Foot となっているようです。
さて、この曲はウォーク・ザ・ムーン(Walk The Moon)によって2017年にリリースされた曲で、アルバム What If Nothing に収録されています。
彼らは、以前ご紹介した Shut Up And Dance のイメージが強かったのですが、あの軽快でチャラい(笑)曲調からは想像がつかない程、重厚で雄々しい曲ですね。うーん、かっこいい……

MVも、荒野と野性味が全面的に押し出されており、大分曲のイメージを踏襲して作られていますね。うーん、やっぱりかっこいい…… 笑
訳、言葉について
Not a soul は、日本語で言うところの「人っ子一人見当たらない」というニュアンスに相当する言葉のようです。Soul は一般的には「魂」で訳されることが多いですが、そこから「命」だとか「生気」「生きている気配」のようなニュアンスも包括しているようです。
Mess という単語が曲中に何度が登場しますが、今回は二つの意味で使われており、一つが「乱雑」という名詞としての表現、もう一つが「酷い目に合わせる」という動詞としての表現です。My heart is a mess の方は前者、They can't mess with us の方は後者となります。
Cross my heart and hope to die は、これ一文で決まり文句だそうで「神に誓って嘘は言わない。嘘だったら死んだって構わない」という意味だそうです。
なお、この前半の Cross my heart は、自分の胸の前で十字を切る行為を指します。これが「神に誓って」という意味になります。
Taking this one step at a time ですが、まず At a time で「～ずつ」という意味になります。その為、One step at a time で「一歩ずつ」という意味になり、それに Take がつくので「一歩ずつ手に入れろ」→「一歩ずつ前に進め」というニュアンスになります。
I got your back は「僕がついているよ」という、相手を支える時にかける言葉です。Back はこの場合「背中」とか「背後」と捉えればニュアンスが分かりやすいかと思います。
そしてキーフレーズの One foot in front of the other ですが、One foot は「片足」、front は「前」、the other は「もう片方」となるので、「片足を、もう片方の足の前に出す」となり、つまりは「一歩前に進む」という意味の言葉となります。実際には、最初に Put を付けて使うようです。
